ALAN (RANDY SCHULMAN) is a successful classical music critic as reflected in his spacious Portland home. His wife SARAH (DIANE DALTON) is an obsessively grieving woman, struggling with an unspoken tragedy, even after months of institutionalized therapy.Upon Sarah's release, Alan forces Sarah into a trip to Italy. He has already arranged for a house sitter in KELLY (LINDSEY HAUN), young and lonely for commitment and the better things in life. Kelly is quickly joined by her younger brother TIM (RJ MITTE), and her trashy-boyfriend JESSE (BLAKE BERRIS). Its not long before the trio find themselves drawn into a web of disturbing revelations. The House of Last Things was for my feeling the superior cinema of theGerardmer Fantastic Film Festival 2013! I know from other audiencepeople that I am not singular with this evaluation. As I think back onthe many films showing, it is this image of this dreamy film that I amalways returning to in my memory. It is a bizarre and beautiful storythat captures the truthful essence of what I believe fantastic cinemashould be. The acting was very convincing and it was extra special tosee the boy from the TV show Breaking Bad in his first movie. I hope itplays in many festivals and I want to find the DVD when it is releasedto the public audience. Thank you to the Gerardmer festival for thissurprise!

My eyes watched this special film in the Gerardmer Film Festival withno seats empty! I was happy for the festival to include one film thatis very fantastical but not stupid with the normal zombie and vampirecult issues of blood everywhere which is today too much in the cinemas.It was probably not expensive to make than the other big Hollywoodfilms in competition, but it has a mood of richness and was a newvision of this genre and the acting was very superior too. I couldappreciate that the director is very learned of the history of greatfantastical films like from Cocteau and even Hitchcock and David Lynch.If you like these directors I am sure you will enjoy this littlemasterpiece as I did!

I wasn't expecting this. A very interesting film from a director whoknows his great directors and isn't afraid to wear them on his sleeve.Even though the mood is meltingly David Lynch, this one would put bigsmiles on the faces of Nick Roog, Brian DePalma, and even Hitchcock.It's rare today to discover in this genre a director who dares to gohis own way and even turn the genre on its head with a style andassuredness that leaves so many others in the dust. The story works onmany levels without cheap thrills as a primary goal, although there acertainly enough surprises along the way. Bartlett's online interviewat the French film festival confirmed my own suspicions that House ofLast Things is not a horror film at all, nor was it ever meant to be,but more a twisted American fairy tale, a metamorphosis of events andcharacters as exemplified in the arcs of its two very attractive leads,Jason and Kelly, who by the end of the film have adopted newpersonalities altogether. Watching this change come over these youngactors is half the fun. If you're interested in something off thebeaten horror path, do check this one out.
